Description

A busy scene. In the foreground is the market hall in Leominster, with a prominent clock on it; the clock is part of the painting, but the hands are real, physical watch hands, and there is a mechanism behind the canvas so that it would work and tell the time. In front of the hall is a stall selling apples, and a man looking up to set his pocket watch by the clock. Also in the foreground is a knife grinder, and a group of figures walking, one apparently being held or supported by two others. The knife grinder's wheel and part of his cart are also a 3d objects, not painted, and the wheel would once turn at various times, by being connected to the watch mechanism. In the background is a line of soldiers in uniform, a couple in a carriage, a small dog, and various pedestrians. Right in the foreground on one side is a man carrying a parcel labelled "James Davies, Watch Maker, Lemster"; this is the painter's father, for whose business this painting was probably an advertisement.

Sound

Context

The mechanism driving the watch and the wheel would have audibly ticked and whirred, providing actual real world noise for the viewer. Noises within the world of the painting conjured up by the visuals, include the apple seller selling her wares, the screech of the knife grinder plying his trade, the dog barking, the hoof beats on the road of the horse pulling the carriage, the crack of the carriage driver's whip, and the general hubbub of conversation. It has been suggested that the figure being supported is being press ganged into naval service; if so, we might imagine him offering some protests, and being silenced. He may equally, however, be drunk and in need of support, in which case we may imagine a rather merrier set of noises.

Smell

Context

The horse and the dog would be contributing various smells to the scene. There is also a chimney sweep by the knife grinder, who is clearly filthy and would have carried a somewhat ripe aroma.
