Temperature

Context

The object is a piece of paper, which I am experiencing digitally, through a digitally preserved access image. I have no physical interaction with the object, but I know it is stored in our MultiMedia Vault. While I know logically that the object is kept somewhere temperature controlled and cool, I also know that there's no temperature element present in my interaction with the object - I'm in my home office, a little cool but not cold, and I'm aware the traditional 'materiality' of interacting with an archive object isn't present.

Temporality

It brings to mind a snapshot of me as a young child wearing a tulle skirt and fairy wings over a pair of jeans - very 90s! The other thing it brings to mind - as its so clearly designed for colder weather - is the kind of big coat you get when it's super cold, maybe being on holiday - the warm clothes you break out for when it's really bone-searingly chilly, but you're nice and warm against the cold.

Physical

It makes me think of wearing over-the-top fancy dress, the kind that's designed for little girls and made of terrible cheap fabric that runs really hot - so I think of being overheated, but not wanting to change. And this type of costume, if it did go through to production and was worn by someone on set, was presumably being worn for long days - it would have been hot and physically a bit challenging to wear on set!

Emotional

It makes me smile. A proper princess outfit.

Touch

Context

A design of a costume for Liztomania, a musical movie. Drawn in brown ink.

Temporality

It looks like a quick sketch - it hasn't been worked over, there's no erased lines. So it gives off the feeling of quick touches, quick lines, a couple of finishing touches added in at a last glance.

Physical

It's not a big drawing, and there's no notable features of the paper - again, just a quick drawing on a piece of paper. Not a scrap of paper, though. It looks clean, pristine - there's no visible damage. I feel like if I was interacting with the paper physically, there'd be a really material element to the interaction - the feeling of the paper, maybe a small difference where the ink is.

Emotional

It looks like a drawing of a doll - so still and in a fanciful outfit that I would have loved as a child. Almost magical!
