Sensory system

Sound

Context

The people in the painting experiencing the space.

Physical

In this painting two men are in a rowing boat in the foreground. The oars are making ripples in the water, showing they are moving. They would hear a regular splash of the oars entering the water, and the drip of residual water falling when the oars are lifted. There is a flock of bird in the background which they would hear chattering and squawking. They would hear the rustle of the tree branches in the wind, and possibly talk and laughter coming from another boating party who are further away from them on the lake. The lake is lapping at the rocks and shore surrounding it.

Proprioception

Context

I am imagining being in the place of the man rowing the boat.

Physical

The boat is unsteady on the waves, and so his body moves from side to side and as we works to keep his balance. The oars are heavy, and moving them through the water takes a lot of power. He braces his arm muscles as he maintains the push and pull of the oars in a steady rhythm. They are nearly at the shore and his biceps are aching from the amount of rowing he has already done. He is warm from exertion and has removed his jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeves in order to cool down. His companion, who has done no rowing, has kept his jacket on because of the strong breeze they are exposed to on the lake. The sky is clear and the sun is beating down on them, so they both keep their hats on to protect from the heat.
